NSU Students Compete in National Tournament

Norfolk State students make the Sweet Sixteen in the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) National Qualifying Tournament. They finished 4 and 2 in the Purple Division. Even though the students did not make the Elite 8, they made a big impression on the tournament organizers, coaches, and competing students.

NSU Holds First Annual Student Health Literacy Symposium

On April 3rd, Norfolk State University hosted a gathering of students, faculty, healthcare professionals, and community leaders to delve into the crucial topic of enhancing health literacy — the ability to understand and act on basic health information — within college campuses and communities. The event was supported by NSU's Office of Health & Wellness and the Center for African American Public Policy in collaboration with EdLogics, a Virginia Beach-based company dedicated to improving health literacy. The symposium guests were welcomed by Student Affairs Vice President Leonard Brown, Ph.D.

Visiting Professor Receives Publishing Award

English and Foreign Language Visiting Assistant Professor, Travis Harris, has been recognized with a VCU Publishing Award for his work in the article "Funk What You Heard: Hip Hop Is a Field of Study," from the Journal of Hip Hop Studies, published by VCU Libraries. Harris says, “Popular rap music is such a small part of a culture that provides opportunities for empowering, giving a voice to the voiceless, creating an identity in the face of oppression and so much more.”


SPICA Holds First Annual Soiree

Student Pathways and Academic Formation hosted its first annual Student Pathways Industry Collaborations and Alliances (SPICA) soiree, “A SPICA Soiree: The Art of Professional Networking & Dining”. During the event, Norfolk State students interacted with industry representatives and NSU faculty and staff to discuss work-based expectations and strategies for a smooth transition from the classroom to the workforce. The goals of the professional networking soiree were to encourage students to participate in networking activities, practice effective communication skills, and learn about various industries and careers from professionals.

Filmmaker David Talbert Visits NSU

David E. Talbert, a master playwright, author, and filmmaker, challenged an audience of mostly Norfolk State University students to think differently. Talbert, whose most recent film was the musical fantasy Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, was in town for NSU’s Department of Mass Communication and Journalism’s MCJR Week and as part of the HBCU Next Tour.
