Master of Arts in Teaching Program

Master of Arts in Teaching -  Secondary Education 
This is an initial teacher certification program which enables its candidates to receive a Master's degree and certification in a subject content area and be qualified to teach in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Requirements

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Program
The MAT program requires that applicants have the following:

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
  • Complete an NSU online Graduate application
  • A minimum undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0
  • Pass the Praxis Core/ VCLA / SAT/ ACT tests
  • Pass Praxis II (before finishing the program)
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • Three letters of recommendation from faculty or employers familiar with the applicant's academic and professional background
  • A personal statement of the applicant’s professional interests and goals
  • Resume
  • *Certificate of Preliminary Endorsement form completed by an advisor in the academic department of intended teaching discipline (This is completed before the interview to assess additional courses the applicant may need before attempted entry into the MAT subject area he/she wishes to pursue).
