Physics and Materials Science
The Department of Physics and Materials
Science Programs is dedicated to advancing our understanding of the physical world through fundamental and applied research, the worldwide promotion of scientific knowledge and literacy, and exceptional undergraduate and graduate education. The department brings together two complementary disciplines with a shared mission: to apply the principles of physics to understand the behavior of matter, advance the development of new materials, and enable innovative applications that benefit society.
We are a research-intensive department that values the role of discovery in education. Research is a central component of the undergraduate experience, supported by strong collaborations with other departments on campus as well as with partners at external institutions and national laboratories.
The Materials Science Graduate
Program is an interdisciplinary program that integrates the fundamental sciences and engineering to advance the understanding, development, and application of materials. At both the undergraduate and graduate levels, the Department offers a rigorous curriculum enhanced by diverse research opportunities and personalized mentorship from dedicated, experienced faculty.
