Student Pathways and Academic Formation accompanied 12 Norfolk State University students to the 23rd Annual Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) Leadership Institute (LI) held in Washington, D.C., September 20 – 23, 2023. The department partnered with TMCF Talent Managers to prepare students for the four-day industry networking event designed to enhance students’ professional and leadership skills, provide a platform where companies have access to diverse and talented scholars, and help students make connections that lead to careers.

As one of the TMCF HBCU member schools, NSU has participated in this career preparation initiative over the years. Amber Torrence, Amiya Chisolm, Brandon Carr, Deasia Stewart, Dejanique Powell, Destiny Brickerson, Jalaya Allen, Jasmyne Harris, Jordan Moody, Maurice Vincent, Yasir Glenn-Brown and Zekiah Enos interviewed with several companies for internships and work-based opportunities.

They interacted with Fortune 500 companies, government agencies and graduate program representatives, as well as networked with representatives providing internships and continuing education opportunities.  Amber Torrence and Jasmyne Harris received $1,000 scholarships from Cargill, while Jalaya Allen received three internship offers, including housing, travel and relocation stipends.  She accepted the offer with Medtronic, which also included a $2,500 sign-on bonus. Allen shared that she is “deeply grateful for the invaluable assistance provided by Student Pathways” and looks forward to becoming a liaison “to the greatness of our university” at these forums.
