Work-Study

Work-study provides eligible students another means of meeting their financial obligations to the university. It is a beneficial program that allows students to gain valuable experience and networking opportunities.

Eligibility Requirements

DNIMAS students and resident assistants are not eligible for work-study.

Other eligible students must:

  • complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the current academic year
  • be enrolled at least half-time in a degree-seeking program (6 or more credit hours)
  • demonstrate financial need
  • have a cumulative GPA of (respective of academic classification)

The minimum grade point average for each classification is indicated below:

  • Freshman - Less than 30 credit hours - GPA: 1.7 or higher
  • Sophomore - 30-59 credit hours - GPA: 1.8 or higher
  • Junior - 60-89 credit hours - GPA: 2.0 or higher
  • Senior - 90 or more credit hours - GPA: 2.0 or higher
  • Graduate - GPA: 3.0 or higher

Work-Study Program

The work-study program allows eligible students to be awarded either federal or institutional work-study. Institutional work-study excludes employment from the following departments: athletics, housing, student activities, parking and band.

If your financial aid award letter indicates that you have been awarded federal or institutional work-study notification will be sent to you informing you of a mandatory workshop that will further inform you of your duties as a work-study recipient. The awarded student has the responsibility of finding and securing campus employment. Various offices and departments around campus will post their available openings to the campus employment website.

Campus Employment

Once a student finds campus employment, a job assignment packet must be obtained from the supervisor and completed by both the student and the supervisor. All documents MUST be returned to the Financial Aid Office prior to the student's first day of work. Students can work up to 20 hours per week (up to 6 hours per day) during the academic year. Students are paid biweekly on Friday at hourly rates based upon their classification. Work-study checks can be retrieved from the Cashier's Office in Wilson Hall (M-F 8:30 am - 4:30 pm).

Once you receive notification of your work-study award, you must find a work-study position on campus, attend a mandatory student orientation, and interview for the position. You will need to bring identification for employment verification. It is a good idea to prepare a resume´ as some departments may request one.

Work-study funds are paid out only when the student works the contracted hours. Since situations could arise which prevent you from working the contracted hours, we cannot rely on those funds as accounts receivable. However, since the checks will be made payable to you, you have the option of using those funds to pay on your account. Students will only be paid for actual hours worked. Students are not paid to study and/or do homework.
