NSU Concert Choir Preps For Two Concerts
(NSU NEWSROOM--Jan. 14, 2014)--The Norfolk State University Concert Choir will perform in two upcoming events beginning in February at the L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center where the public can take an opportunity to immerse in the arts and witness unique community collaborations.
The events will help showcase alliances between the choir and other respective performing arts and educational institutions.
The first event, the HBCU Choral Festival, will be held on Sunday, Feb. 16, at the Wilder Center at 5 p.m. Choirs from Hampton University, Oakwood University, and Virginia State University are expected to perform along with the NSU Concert Choir.
A few weeks later, on Friday, March 28, the NSU Concert Choir will perform with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra in Voices Six: Let a New Earth Arise concert. The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Wilder Center. The concert will honor late and current world leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, Pope Francis, Yvonne Miller, and others.
Dr. Carl Haywood, who directs choral activities at Norfolk State University, said the funds raised from the concert will go to support scholarships for deserving students at Norfolk State University. He added that members of the NSU Choirs have been rehearsing with great interest and enthusiasm as they perfect the choral literature for the performance.
“Thematically, the concert pays tribute to six individuals who by virtue of their deeds and acts made this world a better place for all,” Haywood said.
Admission is the same for both concerts. For adults, $20 in advance and $25 the day of the concert. For students and children, $10 in advance and $15 the day of the event. No children under 8 years of age will be permitted. For tickets/Information, call 757-823-8529 or 757-823-8565. The following website should be used for online purchases: nsuchoirs.com.
