Administrative Priorities

Practical experience gained from six years on the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools - Commission on Colleges (“SACS-COC”) serves as the basis for the administrative priorities. The priorities are rooted in the principle of “Institutional Integrity” and the SACS Principles of Accreditation (2012).

Institutional integrity is the foundation of the University’s relationship with its governing board, accrediting bodies, faculty and staff, and most importantly, Norfolk State University students. Integrity is essential to the purpose of higher education and functions as the basic contract for these important relationships (SACS-COC Principles of Accreditation, 2012).

The following administrative priorities represent the markers for the University’s work in the immediate future:

Academic Competitiveness. The University will enhance its academic competitiveness through improved academic programming with a student-centered approach. The stated mission and goals of the academic enterprise will be monitored with greater transparency and consistency. Academic programs and those providing instruction will be evaluated for rigor and viability. Norfolk State University students will receive high quality instruction and academic opportunities that will enable them to be competitive and successful in their educational career.

Fiscal Security. A sound financial base and record of fiscal stability are critical components of success in meeting the University’s mission. The University will secure and exercise management and control over its financial and physical resources to promote student learning and its mission.

Institutional Effectiveness. The University will systematically and explicitly measure its performance against its mission and Strategic Plan. A commitment to continuous improvement will be the standard for all programs, services, and constituencies. A commitment to institutional effectiveness affects decision-making at all levels and provides a sound basis for budget decisions, resource allocations, and plans for institutional improvement.

Mission Statement Through exemplary teaching, scholarship, and outreach, Norfolk State University transforms lives and communities by empowering individuals to maximize their potential, creating life-long learners equipped to be engaged leaders and productive global citizens.
