Welcome
The NSU Service-Learning
Program was established in 2003. The goals of NSU Service-Learning are
to:
- Establish a
university-wide service-learning program and ensure a centralized
process for planning, administering and assessing service-learning
initiatives
- Strengthen students'
critical thinking and leadership skills as well as engage students in
civic activities
- Enhance faculty
professional skills through on-campus workshops, teleconferences,
travel to professional meetings and scholarly research
- Increase
academic/community partnerships by identifying and addressing community
needs

provide information about the Service-Learning program here at Norfolk
State University.

NSU Named to President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll
Congratulations ! Norfolk State University was named to the second annual President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, Spring of 2008. The university received an official certificate recognizing its achievement for academic year 2007. Special acknowledgement goes to the NSU Service-Learning and Civic Engagement program, for submitting the information about the university’s service activities.
The certificate reads as follows:
“The President of the United States of America hereby recognizes and congratulates Norfolk State University for the extraordinary and exemplary community service contributions of its students, faculty, and staff in meeting critical community and national needs.”
The award is sponsored by the Corporation for National Community Service, the U.S. Dept. of Education, the U.S. Dept of Housing and Urban Development, USA Freedom Corps and the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation.

NSU Service-Learning
and Civic Engagement program to host Senior Fellow from Michigan State
University for its Annual Spring Workshop: April 1-2, 2008.
Norfolk State University, a
member of the HBCUFDN Campus To Campus Partnership,
is pleased to welcome Dr. Francisco A. Villarruel. Dr. Villarruel is a
University Outreach and Engagement Senior Fellow, and Professor of
Family and Child Ecology, at Michigan State University. His scholarly
research focuses on youth policy/juvenile justice, youth development,
and Latino youth and families. Villarruel has published over 50 journal
articles and book chapters, edited six books, and coauthored five state
or national policy reports. Villarruel has received numerous awards and
distinctions during his career, including a W.K. Kellogg Foundation
National Fellowship, an MSU-Lilly Foundation Teaching Fellowship, the
HACU-ETS Policy Fellowship, and the 1996 MSU Teacher-Scholar Award for
dedication and skill in teaching and scholarly promise.

Focus the Nation - January 28-31, 2008
Norfolk State University has made a commitment to do its part to help eliminate global warming. The university’s recently renovated Robinson Technology Building is certified as a Leadership in Energy and Environmentally Design (LEEDS) structure. Additionally, NSU refurbished and upgraded all lighting, HVAC, plumbing, and energy management systems, resulting in a 35 percent reduction in energy consumption

Our mission is to
acquaint and give easy access to our faculty, students and community
partners about the various onsite service-learning resources. There are links to
download service-learning forms, sample syllabi, conferences and events,
recent research, community agency listings, service-learning
scholarships and grants and access to other
service-learning websites.
This site will also provide
information about the service-learning opportunities and civic
engagements for student placements at the undergraduate and graduate
level. Periodically, Reflection essays by students and brief articles from
Service-Learning faculty members will be posted on the
website. Conference PowerPoint presentations, and briefings from
Technical workshops will also be posted under the title" Spotlight on
NSU Service-Learning Practioners."
