Kemba Smith to Speak at Norfolk
State Feb. 16
Norfolk, Va.— As part of Norfolk State University's Annual African-American History Month Celebration, Kemba Smith, will speak at Norfolk State at noon, Friday, Feb. 16, in the L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center. Free and open to the public, Smith's speech, "Kemba Tells Her Story", will discuss the nightmare she faced when she met her first love. Through the relationship, Smith unknowingly became involved in illegal activities that resulted in a 24-year sentence in a federal prison. Smith, a first time offender, was incarcerated even though the prosecutor admitted that she did not sell, use, or benefit from the drugs in the conspiracy. On December 22, 2000 President Bill Clinton granted Smith clemency. She hopes that this will bring attention to the injustices of mandatory minimum sentences, which have incarcerated thousands of first time, nonviolent drug offenders for extreme periods of time with no consideration of their non-criminal history. Following Smith’s speech, a question and answer period will follow. For more information, call 823-8373.
