Norfolk, Va.— The Virginia Association of Black
Psychologists will host the 6th Annual Francine Kee Peterson Memorial Scholarship
Conference HIV/AIDS in the African-American Community: Issues and Prevention
from 8 a.m.- 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 17 at Norfolk State University’s L. Douglas
Wilder Performing Arts Center.
Conference to Be Held Nov. 17 Led by a team of psychology professors from Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University, Montclair State University and Virginia Commonwealth University who specialize in AIDS/HIV research, the conference will provide a comprehensive overview of AIDS/HIV issues and prevention, workshops, panel discussions with keynote speakers, tips focusing on the role of culture and context in preventative interventions and more. The featured speakers at the
conference will be: Val Derlega-A social and personality psychologist and professor at Old Dominion University, Derlega coordinates the Positive Living series, an educational program for persons living with HIV sponsored by Eastern Virginia Medical School. Derlega’s research on HIV focuses on disclosure, social support, stigma management, sexual risk-taking and medical adherence. Sandra Y. Lewis- An associate professor of psychology and director of African-American studies at Montclair State University, Lewis has produced AIDS/HIV book chapters, journal articles, consumer guidebooks and videos regarding psychosocial support of women and families. In addition to the featured speakers’ presentations and panel discussion, Janis Sanchez-Hucles, author of The First Session with African Americans, will be available for a book signing. The Francine Kee Peterson Memorial Scholarship will be awarded at the luncheon, which will be held at 1 p.m., to an African-American doctoral student in psychology who has demonstrated a commitment to community service and cultural diversity. Peterson was a clinical psychologist who was an active charter member of the Virginia Association of Black Psychologist. She worked diligently with both individuals and families in her private practice at Clinical Associates of Tidewater The cost for the daylong conference, which includes lunch, is $55 for professionals and $15 for students. For an additional $10, continuing education units may be received. Registration by Nov. 10 is preferred, but on-site registration is available.
