Peer Mentor/Advisor Program

The ACCESS Peer Mentoring/Advising Program is designed to assist first-year students in reaching their academic potential in the transitional first year, especially the critical first semester of college.

Peer Mentor/Advisors will be assigned by major when possible and to serve as a guide about available resources on campus

The The goals and objectives of the program are to:                      

o   Serve as a continuous contact with new students

o   Connect students to services and resources at NSU

o   Provide information about the resources available at NSU

o   Provide tips on study skills and share academic “success strategies”

o   Assist with establishing goals, as well as identifying strategies to accomplish these goals

o   Serve as a networking source

o   Encourage mutual relationships between faculty/staff and undergraduate students

o   Provide advice for academic scheduling

o   Advise students on how to manage time, improve study skills, approach faculty when necessary, and deal with stress.

o   Make suggestions on how to balance academic and social life  

o   Improve first-year student success

o   Improve the retention and graduation rates of students 

Peer Mentor/Advisor

Job Description:  Peer Mentors/Advisors will assist ACCESS Advisors in providing advisement and mentoring to students.  Peer Mentors/Advisors are expected to have knowledge of the course catalog and participate in staff development and training sessions.  Applicants must be familiar with campus resources, individual course requirements, internships related to the major, career opportunities/resources, and curriculum requirements within the major.  Peer Mentors/Advisors provide faculty and staff with a student perspective and input on advising needs.   Additionally, Peer Mentors/Advisors will develop and conduct special advising projects for department.

Qualifications:

Ø  Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0

Ø  Full-time degree seeking student

Ø  Membership and demonstrated leadership in University student organization (s)

Ø  Excellent communication skills

Ø  Excellent interpersonal skills

Ø  Minimum availability to work 10 hours per week

Ø  Completed application and referral letters from a faculty and or staff member at NSU
