Hazard identification & remediation
Hazard identification & remediation are important factors in preventing
injuries. Reports of physical conditions that could contribute to an injury or
damage are investigated by this office. Requests for corrective measures are
then routed via the Work Management Office to the respective tradesmen.
Incident reporting
All
incidents involving motor vehicles must be immediately reported to the
University Police, who investigate, prepare reports and issue summons when
warranted. Involved individuals are expected to cooperate with the officer on
scene. Any injuries must be immediately reported to the officer, who if
requested, can contact emergency medical personnel.
Incident investigations
All
injuries to members of the campus community are serious concerns
- Students who are injured in a classroom or laboratory must report the incident to the instructor.
- Injuries in residential buildings must be reported to the respective Building Coordinator or Resident Assistant.
- University staff or faculty who are injured must advise their respective supervisors.
- Injuries involving guests should be reported directly to the University Police.
- All requests for Paramedics and ambulances must be routed through the University Police, who will escort the vehicles to the scene.
Elevator etiquette
Most
of the buildings on campus are equipped with elevators. There is a concerted
effort to maintain all units in optimum condition. Individuals who abuse the
elevators cause inconvenience for other people, especially the physically
challenged.
Some
practices to remember:
-
Never force open the car or floor doors as this
will adversely affect the mechanisms.
-
Use the button on the car panel to hold open
the doors.
-
Allow persons to exit the car before boarding.
-
Do not drop debris between the car and the
shaft way. Debris can get caught between the car and the doors, and contribute
to fires in the pit.
-
Personal items dropped into the shaft way, can
be retrieved for a fee.
-
All elevator cars are equipped with emergency
telephones or intercoms with the University Police, for the specific purpose of
requesting assistance.
-
Repeatedly pushing a floor call button will not
accelerate the car. Vertical speeds of the elevator cars are carefully set for
passenger comfort and safety.
-
As with all state buildings, smoking is
prohibited inside the elevator cars and lobbies.
-
Overloading the elevator capacity will cause
the lift system to shut down.

Regulatory compliance
Regulatory interpretation of standards enforced by the Virginia Department of
Labor & Industry is a responsibility of this office. These regulations form the
basis of employee occupational safety & health programs, and may be accessed at
http://www.doli.virginia.gov.
As an agency of the Commonwealth, NSU fully embraces the regulations and is
committed to the safety of all members of the campus community.
Fire protection
Fire
prevention, detection, notification and suppression systems exist for the
protection of persons and property. All dormitories are equipped with fire
alarm panels that continuously communicate directly with the University Police
and indicate system status.
The Campus system consists of approximately 5,000
sprinkler heads, 2,000 smoke & heat detectors, 900 alarms and 500 manual “pull”
stations. Periodic improvements are scheduled to upgrade notification
capabilities and enhance safety. All systems receive daily checks, and monthly,
quarterly and annual operational inspections are performed as required, along
with annual inspections by the state fire marshal.
Emergency evacuation procedures
Residential students are provided instructions on fire regulations and response
procedures to fire alarms. Exit routes, assembly sites, roll call and return
to quarters are explained in detail by residential assistants. All students are
required to participate with such exercises as a means of assuring their
personal protection.
In academic and administrative buildings, Instructors and
supervisors are expected to lead their respective personnel out of the building
to a pre-designated site. Attendance is to be taken and University Police are
to be notified of any missing or injured persons.
Vehicle safety
Drivers of motor vehicles on campus must have a current driver’s license, and
observe all traffic signs. The speed limit is 15 MPH. Vehicles owned by NSU
may only be driven by qualified University employees. Students are not
permitted to operate University vehicles.
University Police are empowered to
enforce traffic regulations and issue summons accordingly. Pedestrians in
walkways and sidewalks have right of way.
