NSU Counseling Center

Mission Statement

The Norfolk State University Counseling Center is a comprehensive mental health department established to serve the campus community with special attention to assisting students who are in crisis. The Counseling Center is committed to creating a campus environment that supports and values the unique contribution of all individuals.

The Center strives to develop and offer services designed to assist students in acquiring those skills, attitudes, and resources necessary to succeed in the college environment and pursue productive and satisfying lives. The Counseling Center is committed to delivering services in a proactive and efficient manner. The Center's goal is to contribute to the overall educational mission of the University by facilitating the academic, emotional, social, and career development of students.

In addition, the Center also trains new mental health professionals, provides consultation to the campus community, and engages in on-going research activity aimed at program evaluation and the assessment of student needs.

The Center considers it an important part of its mission to design and deliver services to all students in ways that recognize, respect, and value the diversity of students' backgrounds, characteristics, beliefs, and abilities.

The Counseling Center provides a range of free professional services to students wanting help with personal concerns. We provide individual, couples, group, and family counseling services.

Students come to the Counseling Center for a variety of reasons such as problems adjusting to college, stress management, relationship problems, and depression.

In addition, Counseling Center staff members consult with members of the university community including students and parents on various student life issues including, stress management, depression and other topics. A host of outreach programs and seminars are provided to students through the Counseling Center.
