Program Director, Food Science & Nutrition
The Food Science and Nutrition (Dietetics) Program prepares
students to be dietitians (management and clinical) or nutrition educators.
Graduates are prepared to take the registration exam (R.D.) for dietitians
through internships or enter into graduate study in the field. Students can
pursue this career by obtaining a Bachelor of Science Degree in either
Chemistry, Exercise Science, or Interdisciplinary Studies with Food Science &
Nutrition Emphases
Dietitians specialize in administrative, clinical, research or community
programs. Administrative dietitians organize and manage food service systems in
hospitals and other institutions. Clinical dietitians assess nutrition care
plans for hospitalized patients, evaluate the results, and consult with
physicians on dietary patient care, either at a variety of institutions or in
private practice. Research dietitians plan, investigate, interpret, evaluate,
apply, and expand the knowledge of nutrition and dietetics. Community dietitians
plan, organize, coordinate, and evaluate the nutrition component of health care
services for health departments and similar community organizations while food
service managers are specialists in the administration of institutional food
plants.
Food Science and Nutrition Program has been issued Initial Accreditation by the
American Dietetic Association. This accreditation status allows all students who
are currently enrolled, as well as prospective students to graduate from an
accredited program.
