Tutoring / Supplemental Instruction Program (SI)
What is Supplemental Instruction?
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a non-remedial, institution-wide program
designed to increase student achievement and retention in "high risk" courses
and escalate graduation rates. The SI program targets traditionally difficult
academic courses that have high percentage rates of D and F grades and
withdrawals, normally first and second year courses.
The SI model of student academic assistance utilizes tutors or SI leaders to
help students integrate course content and learning/study strategies in
regularly scheduled out-of-class, peer facilitated sessions. Because SI is open
to everyone enrolled in a specific class, study sessions attract students from
all ability levels.
The College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certified the NSU
Supplemental Instruction program at the Level I stage. Certification establishes
creditability for the program and provides professional standards for tutor
training. SI courses include intermediate algebra, Auto CAD, and biology. The
key persons are the SI coordinator, the SI leaders, NSU faculty/staff, and of
course, NSU students.
