New Initiative Gets Freshmen Reading Same Book
The Divisions of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs recently announced the Freshman Reader Program, a new initiative for freshman students and the campus community. The focus of this effort is to set the tone for academic excellence and engage the campus with the newest members of the Spartan family. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot is the initial reading for 2012-13. Students will receive the book during freshman orientation sessions this summer. They will be encouraged to read and respond with a short essay, before returning to campus for Welcome Week. As part of Welcome Week, students will participate in small group discussions and a lecture and discussion with the book’s author or an expert on the book’s topic.

Board of Visitors Approves Tuition Increase
The Norfolk State University Board of Visitors approved a 2.2 percent raise in tuition and fees for the 2012-13 academic year for in-state students. The increase is in keeping with a recommendation from Gov. Bob McDonnell to keep increases below the Consumer Price Index. In-state undergraduate tuition will increase $5.33 per credit hour. There is no change to mandatory fees or out-of-state student tuition rates. “NSU is attempting to contain educational expenses for our students,” said President Tony Atwater, “while maintaining the academic quality and addressing operational expenses."
